Dr. Schwarz is a Board Certified MD in CARDIOLOGY and ANTI-AGING MEDICINE - INTEGRATIVE HEALTH whose philosophy and approach to his patients is directed at looking at ROOT CAUSES to determine a personalized treatment plan which involves:
INTEGRATIVE CARDIOLOGY is a specialty that focuses attention on non conventional therapies, such as optimizing nutrition, low dose medication if needed, targeted nutrient support with herbal supplements, natural approaches to optimize metabolism, functional fitness - CROSSFIT, utilization of BIO-IDENTICAL HORMONES, repairing the GUT MICROBIOME, stress management and natural approaches to lengthen TELOMERES.
His goal is to coach patients to learn and take a proactive approach to help themselves learn how to heal themselves
Conventional medicine (or as Dr Peter Attia describes it - Medicine 2.0) is built around the concept of labelling you with a reimbursable diagnostic code (diagnosis) and then finding the medications or a procedure to match.
A functional or integrative model of care (Medicine 3.0) works through the functional matrix, balances imbalances, considers the connection of mind-body-spirit and often can’t label your symptoms with a single diagnostic name because body systems communicate. Care is unique to the individual and unlike conventional Medicine 2.0 , you are not broken into parts or systems but rather viewed as a whole person. The core of functional medicine is finding the why, or the root cause, and simply operating in a diagnosis to medication model doesn’t fit.
In addition, the egg-timer approach to your care is eliminated and there is more time spent with you (both in person and afterwards researching your unique case) to get to the root of your issue, using advanced testing that takes more time and knowledge to interpret, and then personalizing your treatment plan.
Many treatments in functional medicine are considered “alternative” because they don’t involve a medication for symptoms, but rather supplement an individual’s unique needs. Functional / integrative physicians understand that what works for you might not work for the other 99 people in a study, because you have a unique genome, microbiome, and lifestyle – factors that aren’t considered in mainstream medicine recommendations.
An electrocardiogram or EKG/ECG is a digital recording of the electrical signals of the heart to help determine heart rate and rhythm. It is also a very quick way to screen for other heart problems - such as prior heart attack, cause of chest pain or shortness of breath, valvular disease or other structural abnormality of the heart.
An Echocardiogram or Echo is an ultrasound of the heart. It is a noninvasive way of looking at the heart function, valvular function, relaxation and contraction of the heart and presence or absence of fluid around the heart.
Stress Echocardiography is used to monitor how the heart and vessels are working. A patient will be exercising on a treadmill while the doctor is monitoring the heart rhythm and blood pressure. Ultrasound images are performed pre and post walking on the treadmill
A carotid ultrasound is a non-invasive test that uses ultrasound to produce images of the carotid artery in the neck which measures the blood flow to the brain and can determine blockages to reduce risk of stroke
We have the ability to perform phlebotomy on site which provides a great convenience to our patients so that they do not have to travel to another facility for lab work.
The Cardiac Cath - or angiogram, is an invasive procedure which helps Dr. Schwarz determine a more in-depth look at your coronary arteries, heart pressures and function, in addition to how your valves are working.
A TEE - or transesophageal echo, is a minimally invasive test which uses ultrasound to image your heart and structures with more clarity when compared to a regular echocardiogram which is done in the office. There may be times when your valves need better imaging or if there are clots inside your heart chambers which need to be evaluated to help prevent stroke.
There may come a time when your heart is out of rhythm which could increase your risk of stroke. This type of rhythm is called ATRIAL FIBRILLATION. Dr. Schwarz may have to "cardiovert" or "re-boot" the heart rhythm back to normal.
Stress testing is normally done in the office, however, if you are unable to walk or are taking some types of medication, Dr. Schwarz might have to do the stress test in the hospital while administering MEDICATION which can increase your heart rate.
